Isolation and application of cellulose nano and microfibrils in various research and advanced technological applications are expanding rapidly due to their environmental benefits and specific functional properties, especially in nanomaterial science. The tensile modulus of elasticity of native forms of cellulose has been reported to be as high as 138 GPa along the chain axis. Although numerous literatures highlighted potential to use micro-and nano-cellulose in structural components as strength enhancer, no practical evidence is available to demonstrate the role of nanocellulose as an extra-ordinary strength enhancer. In order to impart the strength characteristics of nanocellulose in a composite material there is a need to better understand the physico-chemical, structural and morphological characteristics of nanocellulose and its derivatives derived from chemical and biological processes. The aim of the proposed research is to overcome barrier to apply unique characteristics of nanocellulose by understanding the dependence of cellulosic fibrils-based composites properties on surface ,intrinsic and morphological characteristics of the fibres. The effect of fiber surface binding properties of cellulose with other molecules, fibre morphology and microstructure on transcrystallinity, and hence the interface, if understood, could be used to develop /nano fibre reinforced recyclable nanocomposites with unique functional and performance properties.
