An essential step in our quest for materials with new or better properties is a detailed characterization of their molecular structure. This structure is often dictated by the various perturbations that a material is subjected to, both during its processing and its use. In this context, my research program addresses two important issues: 1) the need for a better understanding of the relationships between the structure, perturbations and final properties of polymers, and 2) the need for better tools to characterize the structure of materials.
