Commercial and sport fisheries are key industries in the Great Lakes region of Canada. Over sixty-five million pounds of fish are harvested each year from the lakes, which contribute more than a billion dollars to local economies annually. However, the fisheries have been declining largely due to human activities. Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) of Lake Ontario have been especially impacted. This species was once an important top predator of the native fish community but it was extirpated from the lake in 1896. Over the past two decades, efforts have gone into revitalizing the Great Lakes habitat and Canada is now poised to successfully reintroduce Atlantic salmon.
