Iron and steel making is a key part of Canada's economy, and one must continually upgrade skills and practices to remain competitive with other countries, companies, and/or alternative materials. Liquid steel quality is one of the key factors in the equation, and 98% of all steels produced, passes through a ladle and tundish, before being distributed to the moulds of a continuous casting machine. There, steel is solidified into billets, blooms, slabs, or strips, for further working to final products (fasteners, re-enforcing bars, sheet, pipes, angles, H beams etc.). This research concentrates on developing novel flows in tundishes and moulds that will substantially improve their efficiency in removing harmful inclusions within the liquid steel prior to solidification.
