This NSERC SPG will use manufacturing breakthroughs from the Canadian Nanotechnology sector to create a new class of ultra-lightweight structural nanomaterials having hierarchical internal architectures that are engineered at the nm-scale and the mm-scale.A major challenge for the Aerospace sector is to manufacture structural materials having the best combinations of strength, stiffness, and density. Optimal structures are often exceptionally difficult to manufacture and standard machining techniques cannot be used. For structures that optimally combine several properties, such as low mass and high thermal conductivity, ideal configurations will not generally be amenable to manufacture by traditional methods.
