With internally architectured materials (of which cellular hybrids are a type) we are inserting an intermediate level of organization within the multi-scale structure of a material for the expressed purpose of modifying the macroscale behaviour. From a practical standpoint this allows one to create new materials that are designed with specific applications in mind, such as maximizing the mechanical performance at minimum weight or at minimum environmental footprint.At the same time, the multi-scale nature of architectured materials structure and design provides a conceptual reference point for re-imagining multi-disciplinary thinking on the basis of the common material starting point.
