项目摘要

This program of research consists of three parts. The first part proposes experiments that address the issue of whether intention in the form of a task set plays a role in the immediate processing (sublexical, lexical and semantic) associated with identifying a word, or whether intention only plays a role in using the products of such processing (such as to direct a response) or whether intention is involved at both levels. A related part of the investigation is to determine whether such an intention is constant, or varies with the context. The second part proposes a series of experiments that seek to determine the extent to which spatial attention (as distinct from eye movements) plays a role in early processes involved in visual word recognition, and further, to determine the extent of its involvement, if any, in domain specific processing . The last part of the proposed work consists of implementing a version of an existing computational model of visual word recognition and modifying it so as to simulate a series of benchmark results from my lab, and at the same time, provide a novel way of thinking about how a major psycholinguistic factor (word frequency) is represented mentally, and how the effect of this factor (along with the closely related factor of repetition) unfolds over time when reading single words aloud.
