Like most high-energy theorists, the overall objective of my program is to try to understand what kind of new physics replaces, at high energies, the hugely-successful Standard Model. I try and do so by using the clues which may be gleaned from string theory, which is the only known theory which reconciles gravity with quantum mechanics. String theory predicts that all of Nature is built from microscopic, one-dimensional strings, that can move along large, macroscopic surfaces (branes) within extra-dimensional space and time.
