The primary objective of this project is to develop innovative braced steel frame systems that will exhibit superior inelastic seismic response compared to conventional braced frames currently used. Two new systems will be examined. They will be built with enhanced energy dissipative elements exhibiting stable hysteretic behaviour and/or self-centering capabilities. The bracing configurations will be designed to mitigate the potential for concentration of inelastic demand over the building height. Design guidelines will be developed so that these systems can be readily implemented in practice. A second objective is to improve current seismic design provisions for conventional steel bracing with multiple bracing panels between storeys. This configuration is very commonly used although it is prone to concentration of inelastic demand over the storey height. All studies will be performed for earthquakes that are expected both in western and eastern Canada so that specific rules adapted to these two types of ground motions are made available.
