The research aims at developing seismic design provisions and innovative systems for steel building structures to achieve uniform level of performance against the different types of earthquakes anticipated across Canada. The work will focus on high frequency ground motions expected in Eastern Canada and long duration motions generated by inter-plate subduction earthquakes predicted west of the Vancouver Island. Seismic performance and collapse prevention will be evaluated through advanced numerical simulations and unique large scale physical testing, including leading-edge real time dynamic sub-structuring tests. Special attention will also be given to the influence of local site conditions on structural seismic response.
