The estimation of the location of a handheld wireless receiver has traditionally involved the usage of a combination of GPS and terrestrial based wireless communicaton signals. This has been highly successful as evidenced by the ubiquitous usage of outdoor location based services and applications. However, indoor wireless location has not witnessed a commensurate degree of maturity and hence usage has been limited to esoteric applications usually of academic curiosity. The reason for this is essentially that to be of practical use, the location accuracy has to be significantly better than for outdoor applications. This is exasperated by weak signal levels and multipath propagation which results in significant location estimation errors. The objective of this research is the development of specialized signal processing algorithms targeted for the handheld mobile receiver platform. These algorithms will specifically take advantage of the physical motion of the antenna of the mobile receiver that is part of its typical usage. The proposed research involves the development of optimum processing algorithms for a mobile handset that can take advantage of any motion of the antenna as the signal data is being collected. Motion can range from small handset orientation changes to large movements if the mobile user is walking or in a moving vehicle. Research will involve analytical development, simulation and measurements with propagated signals. The enhanced processing will ultimately provide more robust and accurate location accuracy as desired.
