Lakes dot the Canadian landscape, providing numerous benefits to Canadians (e.g. drinking water, recreation) as well as a home for both flora and fauna. Many lakes in southern Canada face pressure from increasing population, while those in the arctic are expected to be strongly affected by climate change. As a physical system, lakes are distinguished by the vast range of motions that occur inside them, from large scale motions driven primarily by the wind, to small scale processes dominated by fluid viscosity, such as those that occur near the lake bottom. A common feature of most lakes is some degree of temperature stratification with lighter (warm) fluid overlying denser (colder) fluid. This stratification facilitates significant wave motion (i.e. internal waves) in the lake interior. Recent advances in scientific computing and computer hardware present an opportunity to improve the simulation of both basin scale and near-bottom dynamic processes in lakes.
