My research program aims to create easy to use, open source software based on cutting edge high-order numerical methods for the simulation of flow phenomena in natural waters with a focus on lakes and the coastal ocean. I, along with my HQP, use this software in high performance computing (HPC) environments (e.g. Compute Canada) to study coherent flow structures such as nonlinear waves and hydrodynamic instabilities, which often exhibit behaviour on very different length scales (tens of meters for the internal wave body, and sub centimetre scales for the hydrodynamic instabilities in the boundary layer in the wave footprint). In the detailed proposal my planned research program is divided into three Thematic Areas:
