There is significant interest in the simplified construction details and improved durability for reinforced concrete that can be achieved by introducing a moderate volume fraction of steel fibers into the concrete matrix. Furthermore, prior research by the applicants has demonstrated the considerable strength increase and reduction in the size effect for shear in thick members that is achieved with the fibers. Complimentary studies at the University of Alberta have also examined the use of high-strength corrosion resistant steel reinforcement as another option to improve constructibility through reduced reinforcement congestion, and to enhance the overall member durability. Both of these so-called high-performance materials show tremendous potential in construction of durable urban infrastructure with low life-cycle costs, including underground structures used for drainage and sewage systems. However, there is no prior work which examines the structural performance of members with combined construction of fiber reinforced concrete and containing high-strength reinforcement. Of special interest is the shear capacity and cracking characteristics of such members, which can often dictate the member design requirements for some infrastructure applications: the shear capacity is known to be influenced by member size, fiber content and reinforcement strains; the crack spacing and crack widths are known to be influenced by fiber content, fiber type and reinforcement configuration.
