The presence of waterborne microbes, toxic metal contamination, and scale build-up during processing are some of the key issues faced by a number of industries. Over the years, innovations in the development of a variety of bactericides and antiscalants have made impact in addressing these issues. However, much needs to be still done to adequately control the delivery of biocides, toxic metals removal and scale build-up. A significant challenge in the treatment of waterborne microbial pathogens, scaling and toxic metal contamination, includes the development of novel water soluble nanomaterials that can i) encapsulate biocides with high loading efficiencies, ii) minimize or prevent scale build-up, and iii) scavenge toxic metals.
