Profs. Theo van de Ven and Jean-Philip Lumb at McGill University, together with Prof. Md Nur Alam at Lakehead University have developed a novel process to make textile from cellulose fibers. Contrary to the most common process of making textile from cellulose, the so called viscose or rayon process, the novel process is ecofriendly and does not use the toxic chemical carbon disulphide used in rayon production. The novel textile contains a number of carboxyl groups, which can be used to functionalize the textile and attach e.g. water-repellent molecules, antibacterial agents, fluorescent dyes, etc. The novel textile can be made on existing textile production facilities. Contrary to rayon production, which requires a special type of pulp as starting material (dissolving pulp), the novel textile can be spun from any delignified pulp, such as kraft pulp. The carboxylated textile is good for single use only, but after a curing reaction it can be rewetted and dried like any other textile.****This proposal is for and I2I market assessment, which will provide valuable information about the future directions of the textile project. The proposed market study will be important in deciding the overall intellectual property strategy adopted by McGill as the field of this technology traditionally has key geographies in Asia and Europe. However North America may have the most to gain in adapting this technology for its idle kraft mills along with considerations for functionalizing the novel textiles. ****
