Kimberlite pipes represent the conduits of long-eroded volcanoes, which formed during the explosive eruption of volatile-rich magmas sourced from the deep mantle (>200km). They are the primary source of diamond although not all kimberlites contain diamond. At present, there are four active Canadian kimberlite mines that produce diamonds (Ekati, Diavik, Victor and Snap Lake) giving Canada a significant share of the global market.
