Understanding landscape patterns that result from natural disturbance regimes is one of the cornerstones of ecosystem-based land management. The approach allows the frequency, size, and severity of natural disturbances to be used as a guide for anthropogenic disturbances with the intent of maintaining higher levels of biodiversity habitat connectivity and heterogeneity and maintain more resilient landscape ecosystems. Applying this concept to forest and land management in the boreal is key to improving best practices for the extraction of natural resources. For such a strategy to work we require an understanding of how, and to what degree, patterns of natural disturbance regimes differ from past and current anthropogenic disturbance activity. This research proposal compares the post-industrial disturbance patterns of three forested, highly managed, forest management areas (FMA) in Alberta to the natural disturbance patterns from the pre-industrial era drawn from existing research
