Heated metal surfaces employed in high-temperature refinery heat exchangers, fractionator furnaces, and delayed coker furnaces tend to accumulate thick thermally insulating foulant layers largely composed of metallic sulfides and carbonaceous coke. Such fouling is major industrial problem that results in hundreds of millions of dollars in additional operating costs. To date it is both poorly understood and poorly controlled. We plan to explain the complex corrosion - asphaltene flocculation synergy that results in fouling using a unique analytical approach.
