Recently human neurophysiological (EEG) measures have become marketable in a variety of low-level entertainment-based products. The headsets that accompany these products may measure some aspects of brain activity but their design and simplicity ensure that muscle and other bodily signals are also recorded thus contaminating any neural signals that may be recorded. As a consequence, currently available headsets are of little or no value in gaming or other virtual environment (VE) applications - nor are they relevant for health sciences applications. However, these headsets demonstrate that the engineering and neuroscience advances over the last 40 years could be packaged in a manner that enables significant advances to be made in areas related to health such as advanced brain-computer interface devices. Equally, these advances could also be harnessed to expand neural interfacing in VE contexts such as simulations relevant to learning-practicing new skills and sophisticated gaming systems. This university-industry collaboration has as its primary goal to develop both the hardware and software necessary to create headsets that record human neurophysiological signals precisely enough to exclude irrelevant bodily activity. These headsets will be designed to enable rapid and significant applications in a range of health, skill learning, and gaming contexts.
