Many manufacturers subscribe to a just-in-time inventory policy to reduce inventory costs. However, for some parts this reduction in inventory costs comes with substantially increased transportation costs. This project will result in a spreadsheet based decision support tool that will model the trade-off between inventory and transportation costs resulting in optimal schedules indicating time and quantity for part orders. This tool will enhance the competitiveness of a Canadian Logistics Company and of the client companies they serve. As clients include tier 2 and tier 3 automotive companies this project will benefit an economic sector of significant importance to Ontario and Canada.
