Rotary vane vacuum pumps are utilized regularly in many diverse applications including sanitation, septic, agricultural and industrial and have considerable energy requirements. This proposal will see the turbomachinery specialists at the University of Waterloo ("Waterloo") partner with Elmira Machine Industries Ltd. ("Elmira"), Canadian manufacturers of a wide range of rotary vane vacuum pumps with international sales. The first phase of the project will involve the development of a complete test rig housed at Waterloo to above international standards including the ability to obtain high temporal resolution measurements of factors impacting performance such as cyclical air flow and pressure and thermal measurement. In the second phase, innovative strategies will be developed to improve performance including evaluating component temperatures and system air flows. Innovative measurement expertise existing within the turbomachinery group at Waterloo will be utilized in this project in conjunction with the technical know-how and skill set of the Elmira team to produce the next generation of Elmira rotary vacuum pumps.
