Over the past 20 years, the process of hydraulic fracturing to enhance the oil and gas production of tight shale deposits has grown in popularity in the fossil fuel production industry. Development of the technology for releasing oil and gas trapped in very tight pore structures of rock has led to a boom in the production of gas in North America, and could very well lead to a revolution in the oil and gas industry as this technology spreads to other continents. Most of the technology development has been rapid and based on practical trial and error research by service companies that provide the hydraulic fracturing services.
