ENPAR Technologies uses state-of-the-art electrochemical technology, known as capacitive deionization, to effectively reduce the concentration of total dissolved solids in water. These include arsenic, nitrate, fluoride, sulfates, metals and other ionic compounds. The advantages of this system are its high removal efficiencies, high water recovery, low maintenance and energy costs. A novel application of this technology is to utilize the reject stream to detect chemical and biological pollutants present in low, but biologically significant, concentrations in water. This could improve the detection of diverse contaminants over current methods. This new University of Guelph/ENPAR collaboration aims to determine if the ENPAR ESD technology can remove two surrogate contaminants, the pesticide 2,4 D and the bacteriophage MS2 from different water sources representing chemical and biological contaminants, respectively. The development of a generalized method to concentrate chemical and biological contaminants from water would have industrial and regulatory importance. Successful implementation of the systems will contribute to Ontario's reputation as a leader in water treatment technologies and improve on Canada's position as an exporter of clean technologies.
