Metal-catalyzed hydrodechlorination of chlorofluorocarbons (C-Cl + H2 --> C-H + HCl) is a useful reaction for the preparation of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) that find use as refrigerants, blowing agents, and solvents with low ozone depletion potential. Recent work has shown that selected unsaturated HFCs also exhibit low global warming potential but more efficient commercial syntheses are required. In this project we will test catalysts for the selective reductive coupling of a C2 chlorocarbon to a C4 unsaturated chlorocarbon that serves as an intermediate to a valuable unsaturated HFC. A combination of rapid throughput catalyst testing and mechanistic studies will be employed in order to identify the optimum catalyst system that can then be utilized by the industrial partner.
