Traditionally, electricity is produced and consumed instantaneously and seldom stored. Despite the existence of grid-scale storage technologies such as pumped hydro-electric storage since the turn of the 20th century, the widespread adoption of energy storage technologies has been effectively consigned, due in part to a lack of economic drivers or lack of suitable landscape or both. Utilities have several potential applications for energy storage (ES) systems. Some of these applications are directly customer related, like energy arbitrage and transmission congestion relief, while others are more indirect, like transmission and distribution upgrade deferral, real power loss reduction, and increased reliability. Further rapid development and adoption of renewables across the board has led to an energy supply that is non-dispatchable, intermittent, time-varying, and not necessarily correlated with system demand profile. Challenges posed by integration of renewables have accentuated requirements for storing energy for inter-temporal purposes, increased short-term and multi-hour ramp rates, higher system balancing capacities, etc. all which can be supplied by ES systems. ES technologies have varying characteristics, capital and operating costs, environmental footprints, operational risk, performance, and life expectancy. These characteristics determine their suitability for various applications. Further, there are four distinct aspects to ES systems: 1) the storage element, 2) power conversion system, 3) control and interface enabling remote monitoring and control by a power system, and 4) power system application. In many instances, these are developed in silos. The proposed network, to be established via dialogue enabled by this workshop, shall bring researchers across these four silos together to develop homogeneous ES systems. Further, there is a significant interest from customers such as utilities, industries and commercial sectors for varying applications. Representatives from these customer groups are invited to be an integral part of this workshop and network to guide R&D from their perspective to create homogenous ES systems.
