Several emerging energy storage (ES) technologies have the potential to deliver numerous services such as frequency regulation, energy arbitrage, etc. These ES technologies are being tested and showcased in large-scale utility-level demonstration projects. While new ES technologies are at the cusp of being integrated into power systems at both transmission and distribution system levels, they need the attention of power systems engineers for investigation, research, and adoption. Therefore, this proposal sets three goals: the development of (a) techno-economic models of ES units, (b) new tools for optimal planning of ES units in power systems, and (c) new methods for optimal scheduling of power systems with ES units.
(a) Goal 1 - Modeling: Various types of ES units will be modeled, including flywheels, batteries, compressed air energy storage systems, ice energy systems, and super-capacitors. Their techno-economic models will be developed for use with grid analysis, planning and economic scheduling algorithms. Derivative market models will also be explored.
(b) Goal 2 - Planning: Metrics and indices that identify the best set of locations to install ES units in power systems will be researched and developed. This will be followed by the development of planning algorithms that will optimally locate and size ES units in transmission and distribution systems based on specific applications. Finally, derivative market tools such as 'futures' will be pursued to create multi-year planning models.
(c) Goal 3 - Scheduling: New algorithms and tools for the self-scheduling of ES units as well as new methods for scheduling transmission and distribution systems with ES units will be developed. Again, derivative market tools such as 'options' to trade in services from ES units will be explored and developed.
The proposed research program holds excellent research promise, ample scope for training HQP and is highly relevant to Canadian utilities and industries racing to build smart grids integrating ES units.
