Differential Mobility Spectrometry (DMS) is a powerful post-ionization filtration technique for mass spectrometry (MS), acting as a highly selective pre-filter for complex samples. ABSciex has introduced a DMS-technology for their instruments called 'SELEXion'. While all ion mobility techniques can provide a degree of separation based on analyte size/shape and charge, SELEXion has the added advantage of also being highly sensitive to the chemical properties of the target species. This is particularly useful when faced with complex mixtures in which the constituents are similar in size, but have subtly different chemistry, something which has been extensively demonstrated in the context of DMS-based separation of isomers.
