Applanix is an Ontario based company that develops and manufactures a line of inertial navigation system products. Applanix's indoor mobile mapping system (also known as Trimble's Indoor Mobile Mapping Solution - TIMMS) was introduced in 2011 by Applanix as a manually operated push-cart, designed to accurately model indoor spaces without accessing GPS. The current system is inefficient at converting the collected high density LiDAR point clouds into an easy-to-interpret 2D floor plan, which significantly limits TIMMS applicability for improving emergency responsiveness and preparedness for the first responders in situations where floor plans are unavailable or unreliable. In support of ongoing research and development of TIMMS, the proposed research is to investigate quick and effective methods to translate the complex 3D point clouds into 3D floor plans, thereby providing a general overview of the building interior where floors plans may not be available or unreliable due to the lack of update.
