Fourier transform synchrotron and infrared tunable laser studies of molecular spectra and energy transfer

Our group uses a variety of spectroscopic techniques to study the rotational and vibrational energies of molecules in the gas phase, collisional interactions and energy transfer. Of particular interest are molecules with large-amplitude internal motions, such as methanol and methylamine, in which two parts of the molecule can move with respect to each other. These motions couple with the rotation and vibration to create complex splittings and shifts of the molecular energy levels. The resulting infrared spectra are very rich, and make the molecules excellent probes of physical conditions in astrophysical environments as well as prototypes for study of intramolecular vibrational redistribution (IVR) processes important in establishing thermal equilibrium.
