Driven by the dangers of climate change, researchers around the world are striving to develop sustainable energy solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This research program investigates multiphase flows with droplets and particles, particularly as they arise in clean energy systems, such as thermochemical hydrogen production and other applications. Hydrogen is a clean energy carrier and potentially major solution to climate change. In the thermochemical copper-chlorine (Cu-Cl) cycle of hydrogen production, water is decomposed into hydrogen and oxygen, through a sequence of processes that involve phase change heat transfer, droplets and particles. This research program conducts numerical and experimental studies to improve the understanding of these multiphase processes. Better understanding of multiphase flows, in these and other applications, will lead to improvements in system performance and energy efficiency.
