Our capacity to develop technologies to obtain highly resolved and accurate images of subsurface geological formations is essential for the sustainable discovery and management of Canadian energy resources and for monitoring of sites for geological sequestration of carbon dioxide. Methods that utilize waves acquired from active-source seismic surveys are at present time the most effective geophysical line of attack for subsurface imaging and monitoring. The goal of the proposed research program involves a methodical study of (1) mathematical methods for seismic data preconditioning prior to imaging and (2) problems of seismic waveform inversion.
