Edges and their effects on wildlife is an area of conservation interest. Despite considerable effort a synthetic understanding of when edges will have positive, neutral, or negative effects on species remains elusive. To develop a mechanistic understanding of why boreal forest songbirds do or do not react to edges requires a shift in approach whereby edges of different types are compared. Comparing edge types in different regions using the same methodological approaches is key to determining why edge behavior varies. Current literature suffers from a lack of quantitative standards for reporting edge effects making it difficult to evaluate why particular edges have an effect based on literature reviews or meta-analysis. Development of field and statistical techniques that convert data to common standards is critical to advancing our understanding of edge impacts.
