DNA is an excellent building-block for nanotechnology due to its nanoscale dimensions, its remarkable ability to self-assemble in a predictable and programmable way, and its capacity to recognize and bind to a wide variety of target molecules. In the near future, it is conceivable that biosensors, medical diagnostics and therapeutics based on DNA nanoarchitectures and nanomachines will be in routine use. In order to achieve this aim, we will require a sound understanding of DNA as a material for nanotechnology before innovative applications can be rationally designed.
