En réponse aux changements climatiques, les paysages arctiques et subarctiques se sont modifiés passablement au cours des dernières décennies. Parmi les changements les plus notoires, l'expansion de la strate arbustive a été observée tant en Amérique du Nord qu'en Europe et en Asie. En plus de modifier la dynamique locale des écosystèmes subarctiques (modification des interactions entre les différentes espèces: compétition, allélopathie, herbivorie), le développement d'un couvert arbustif généralisé à l'ensemble de la région circumpolaire pourrait avoir de vastes implications pour le système climatique planétaire en altérant, entre autres, les échanges d'énergie entre la surface terrestre et l'atmosphère.
