The hot forming of aluminum sheets generates good production rates while providing vital flexibility when making parts with complex shapes. A major problem however is the adhesion of aluminum to die surfaces. Existing coatings and surface treatments for die surfaces fall short of preventing aluminum adhesion during hot forming. The proposed research seeks a solution to this problem using a tribological system approach in which both die and workpiece surfaces, as well as adhesion mechanisms, will be studied systematically. Briefly, the project consists of two main components:
