The application of wireless technology is widespread and our culture has an appetite to be un-wired. Cell phones, wireless data, GPS, digital radio and TV, and wireless peripherals are common applications of communication technology. In terms of energy consumption, which relates to battery size in mobile devices, and utility costs in infrastructure, the power efficiency of the radio frequency (RF) amplifier is very important. The RF amplifier circuitry consumes a large portion of the power in a wireless system, and improvements in amplifier efficiency have significant implications for the overall energy consumed in a wireless device.
