Growth in aggregates and biofilms is common among microbes and is thought to represent a conserved survival strategy. For bacterial species that are unable to form spores, the ability to aggregate is critical for survival under extreme conditions. My research program focuses on an aggregation phenotype linked to the long-term survival of disease-causing isolates of Salmonella. It is our hypothesis that the ability to aggregate is essential for Salmonella survival in the environment and transmission between hosts.
