Processing of quantum information with photons is an interesting and fascinating discipline, which emerged from the fundamental questions in quantum physics. Photons do make very good systems for quantum information processing, as they are fast, easily generated, manipulated and detected, and show very little decoherence. Quantum photonics can be utilized for protocols such as communication, computing, metrology, simulation, in addition to enabling fundamental studies on quantum entanglement. As the most prominent example of quantum protocols, the transmission of photonic quantum information leads to novel applications for highly secure communication systems, so called quantum cryptography.
