Computer simulations are not yet able to predict the plastic behaviour of crystalline materials and so cannot predict the toughness or strength of a bulk polycrystalline material or the material layers used in micro-devices. As a result, new alloys and material layers with targeted mechanical properties are synthesized by a process which depends largely on intuition and trial and error not sound engineering analysis. The goal of this research program is to develop a comprehensive multiscale simulation framework to predict plastic behaviour based on atomistic structure and composition and grain size and shape. Plasticity in metals depends upon angstrom-sized crystal defects called dislocations and micron-sized features such as grain structure.
