Mobility related disabilities affect about 10% of all Canadians. These disabilities can in large part be effectively treated using mobility assistive technologies (MATs) such as braces, artificial limbs, and other walking aids. However, existing MATs suffer from numerous technical shortcomings that limit their overall effectiveness. In this regard, the overall objective of this research program is to develop techniques to better understand the biomechanics of MAT use under real-life mobility conditions and to ultimately use this knowledge in the design of MATs. Our unique scientific approach is to develop a universal platform of instruments including wearable sensors and associated models that can be applied to a broad range of MATs and within real-life environments. A significant portion of this work will be targeted at determining the kinetic interactions between MATs and the human body, a research area that is not well developed, but fundamental to informing the design of MATs that are more comfortable, less likely to cause secondary injuries, and improve overall mobility performance for individuals with disabilities. This work is expected to contribute to the field of natural science and engineering in several ways, including the development of new instruments, biomechanical models and analytical techniques focused on quantifying the real-life biomechanics of human movement and mobility. Moreover, this research program offers a unique opportunity for the training of undergraduate and graduate students in a multidisciplinary setting spanning the health and engineering fields.
