The air transport industry is launching international efforts towards reducing its environmental impact, following the 2008 accord signed by all active players with goals of reducing by 80% NOx and by 50% CO2 emissions by 2020. Aerodynamic improvements, such as those brought through laminar flow control or new aircraft configurations concepts, are being viewed as potential if not necessary technologies to achieve these objectives. Whereas research is being conducted to study the impact of specific technologies, there is a need to further develop aerodynamic analysis in the context of overall aircraft design, i.e. where the aerodynamics effects of these new technologies must be assessed vis-à-vis the aircraft as a vehicle, such as manufacturing effects or certification requirements.
