The supercritical water-cooled nuclear reactor (SCWR) is an innovative candidate to meet the future needs of the energy market. This project aims to develop experimental and molecular modeling tools for the Gen IV SCWR chemistry program, with the main focus on supercritical aqueous fluids and their interactions with nuclear reactor materials. Our key research goal is to identify water chemistry specifications that will minimize corrosion rates and minimize corrosion product deposition on in-core and out-of-core components of the SCWR (e.g., piping, turbine blades). The main technical objective for this project is to investigate feasibility of the hydrogen and hydrazine water chemistries for the suppression of the effects of water radiolysis at the operating conditions of the Canadian-SCWR. This work is expected to offer significant savings in future operating costs and will result in a better environmental protection.
