The internet-enabled devices, such as smart phones, tablets, and Wireless Sensor Networks, are the cornerstones of the Internet of Things offering sustainability in a wide spectrum of public services from preserving natural resources to delivering health care. These complex but highly capable embedded systems must not only be energy and cost efficient, but they also must securely handle transmitting, receiving and storing sensitive data. The ability of these smart devices to withstand security attacks becomes crucial for establishing trust in these novel new technologies. As opposed to the aggressive transition towards miniaturization, security assessment of these devices has shown limited advancement and largely remains unexplored. Neverthless attacks on these new smart devices may be devastating, impacting a countries, companies, or individuals privacy, finances, integrity, authenticity, and security. Examples of these effects include identity or service theft, device cloning, loss of confidentiality, and financial or personal loss. This research proposal will examine viable active attacks and countermeasures for real embedded systems which is important for enabling and supporting secure devices within our society today and in the future.
