Rare earth (RE; group 3 and lanthanide metal) catalysts exhibit a range of unique and commercially attractive polymerization behaviours that are typically inaccessible with transition metal (TM) catalysts. These behaviours can provide access to new types of polyethylene copolymer and can also allow polymerization without use of a co-catalyst. However, the vast majority of RE catalysts are thermally unstable at the temperatures required for high catalytic activity in solution, which has prevented commercialization.
