With the introduction of fourth-generation (4G) mobile networks, mobile devices are able to access and take advantage of an array of different network transmission types, which will allow users to have network access from virtually anywhere. More than just handsets, mobile devices, in particular smartphones, are now personal data centers that contain everything from contact information and photos to banking and credit-card information. While smartphones and mobile applications significantly facilitate the access to business information as well as the connection to professional and social networks, smartphones are becoming a key target for mobile security attacks. A secure smartphone platform dedicated to providing security and management features is highly desirable for transforming customer smartphones into enterprise-class devices, as specified by a recent special publication by NIST. The proposed project will develop efficient security solutions for protecting the application, the user and the mobile network from malicious attacks, and shield businesses from the financial and reputation issues they are experiencing today. The goal of the proposed project is to design, implement, and test a prototype hardware cryptographic engine for achieving protected smartphone communications. The research will lead to a security enhanced system that is able to provide strong end-to-end protection for multimedia applications on smartphones. Those advanced data-security and management solutions will give end users peace of mind while enjoying the high-speed data rate and superior user experience of 4G networks. The proposed technology will ensure Canada's position in the forefront of mobile security technology and is expected to gradually establish business relationships with mobile service providers all over the world.
