Wild oat is a pernicious agricultural weed that has been selected for resistance to most commonly used herbicide. Pyroxasulfone, a new soil applied herbicide may provide control of wild oat. However, control of wild oat in field trials has been variable. Efficacy may be related to the position of the wild oat in the seed bank. Wild oat has mesocotyl elongation that permits it to emerge from deep within the soil profile. In direct seeded fields, seed dispersal places seed on the soil surface while in tilled fields, wild oat can be found throughout the soil profile. These experiments will examine the effect of wild oat seed position in greenhouse, small plot and field trials. The goal of the research is to direct research and adoption of pyroxasulfone for control of herbicide resistant wild oat.
