The low-energy Waterloo EC-P technology developed by Waterloo Biofilter Systems Inc. removes phosphorus in septic systems by dissolving iron into the sewage. The company has shown that high removal rate of phosphorus is achieved through precipitating iron-phosphorus minerals in a variety of in-line biological filtration units. Although no leaching out of phosphorus has been observed to date, the identities as well as physical and chemical properties of the precipitated minerals remain unknown, which hinders the long-term assessment of the efficiency of the technology. The company will be able to better evaluate and achieve high long-term phosphorus removal rate and potentially reduce energy input by investigating compositions and stability of the iron-phosphorus minerals under various geochemical conditions.
