Apples are one of the most important fruit crops in Ontario with nearly 16 000 acres in production worth over $87 000 000/year. Apples are typically propagated by grafting onto specific root stocks to maintain desired characteristics and the rootstock must be asexually propagated to maintain these traits. Ontario growers currently obtain rootstock from American, European, and some Canadian producers. The dependence on foreign sources introduces the potential for introduction/spread of insects and disease and supply could be delayed or interrupted at any given time. A domestic supply of rootstock would reduce the chance of pest/disease introductions, ensure a continuous supply, and create jobs in Ontario.
