Blast testing on wood has been very limited, partly because wood, due to its low mass and brittle nature, is not seen as a viable option to resist blast loads. The introduction of NORDIC's new X-Lam cross-laminated timber opens up great possibilities for using wood in blast resisting structures. The research will focus on the flexural capacity of the CLT slabs as well as the connections at the boundary of the panels, to establish design requirements for ductility ratios. Response limits for different damage levels of the CLT panels will be investigated with realistic boundary conditions when subjected to blast loading. An investigation of the effect of high strain rates on the flexural capacity of CLT and determine a dynamic increase factor (DIF) will also be undertaken.
